F280 Heat Gain/Loss Calculations
New homes in BC and Alberta are required meet F280 calculation specifications for heating and cooling as a part of their building codes. The CoEfficient team is ready to help! Get quick and reliable solutions tailored to help you navigate this new requirement.
What is F280?
F280 is an industry recognized methodology meant to calculate heat loss and heat gain in a building. Its main usage is to properly size heating and cooling within a home. By accurately assessing the amount of heat that a building gains and loses under specific conditions, the F280 methodology enables the selection of heating and cooling equipment that meets the precise requirements of the building.
What Does This Mean for Builders & HVAC Installers?
British Columbia
BC has now introduced new requirements to cool homes. If the municipality you’re building in enforces these rules, you will need to provide an F280 calculation to receive your building permit.
The energy advisor you’re working with for Step Code Compliance may not be qualified to do these calculations.
Our team is certified and highly experienced in both Step Code and F280 and we are ready to help you with all the required steps to make sure your build or install reaches the necessary goals.
Part 9 designers are mandated to use the CSA F280 standard to determine that a minimum of one living space in each dwelling unit meets the 26°C maximum indoor temperature requirement through either passive or active cooling measures.
CSA F280 calculations overcome limitations of the HOT2000 modeling software and will accurately determine the peak cooling loads in line with Sentence 9.33.5.1.(1) of Division B.
Our team is certified by TECA (Thermal Environmental Comfort Association) in F280 calculations and we are ready to ensure that your design meets the required standard.
Alberta
Municipal requirements in Alberta necessitate precise mechanical system sizing to avoid over/under sizing, comfort issues, and inefficiencies, as stated in the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition Section 9.33.5.1.
Our licensed and certified staff are equipped to address these changes to the building code as municipalities begin to require CSA F280 calculations in Alberta.
